wherewework Kenya

Since 2019, Kupenda and our local partner, Kuhenza, have been designing, testing, and scaling disability advocacy interventions in Kilifi, Kenya. As part of this work, we have provided resources, trainings, and technical support to more than 100 Kenyan organizations who have improved the lives of thousands of children with disabilities throughout the county.

PROJECTS IN KENYA

Equipping Local Leaders and Nonprofits to Support People with Disabilities

Kupenda has conducted disability trainings, arranged community sensitization events, and provided technical support that has inspired and equipped hundreds of Kenyan community leaders and nonprofits to include people with disabilities in their outreach efforts. Many of these leaders and organizations are now using our approaches and tools to arrange their own disability sensitization events and provide support to dozens of families impacted by disability in their communities.

In Kenya, people with disabilities have legal protections under both the Constitution and the Persons with Disabilities Act (2003), which guarantee their rights to equality, non-discrimination, and access to education, employment, and public services. Despite these laws, implementation remains a challenge.
For example, only 5% of public buildings meet accessibility standards, and 80% of people with disabilities are unemployed (often due to stigma and lack of workplace accommodations). Additionally, around 30% of children with disabilities are not in school.

We are working to change this.
