Livelihoods

Many people with disabilities and their caregivers experience challenges to obtaining and sustaining an income and the security that it provides. Issues such as stigma and discrimination, accessibility barriers, disability-related expenses, and caregiving responsibilities all pose barriers to achieving long-term financial stability and empowerment. In low- and middle-income countries, 80-90% of people with disabilities are unemployed. Even in high-income countries, unemployment is twice as high for those with disabilities than for those without. This disparity is even more pronounced for women with disabilities. These beliefs also prevent people with disabilities from accessing education and vocational training opportunities. In fact, only 2% of children with disabilities are enrolled in school in low-income countries.

Kupenda helps young adults with disabilities and parents and caregivers of children with disabilities break free from the cycle of poverty and generate more sustainable incomes. Through education, trainings, mentorships, support groups, and microloans, Kupenda helps these individuals access employment and improve their income-generating activities. Ultimately, this fosters greater self-sufficiency and improves access to the resources they need to thrive.
