Inclusive Running Club Impact: Mercy’s Story

by Lauren Blair

At 14 years old, Mercy still felt pangs of loneliness. Not only did her community struggle to understand that disabilities were not a curse, but they lacked the ability to communicate with her since she was deaf. When she learned about an inclusive Running Club, developed by the Micah 6:8 Foundation and piloted and implemented by Kupenda for the Children, she was immediately interested. The club aimed to promote inclusion between children with and without disabilities. For Mercy, this represented both an opportunity to try something new and to potentially make the friends she had always longed for.

Discovering a Gift

As Mercy began attending the club meetings, she was surprised that she not only excelled at the physical exercises but in leadership! In a very short time, she was appointed as a running captain. She ensured all the materials were ready for each meeting, but she also had a unique ability to bring the other children together with her encouragement.

Each week, the club included physical activity along with social, spiritual, and educational content. Children learned about running while also learning about the value of all people, including those with disabilities. As Mercy listened to the scripture from Bible lessons, she was captivated by the value God placed on all his people.

More Than Friendship

In response, she began to memorize the verses that were being taught and read her Bible as often as possible. As her confidence grew, she even started gathering girls at her school who were not in the club so she could share the meaningful things she had learned. Under her leadership, the other girls also began to read scripture and memorize verses.

Today, Mercy can still be found studying and sharing her knowledge with others. She continues to inspire those around her to understand and implement God’s message of loving inclusion. Mercy, who once felt isolated, now takes joy in interacting with others.

Thank you for supporting youth like Mercy to become bridge-builders for their entire community!
