but how much love we put in the doing.

It is not how much we give,
but how much love we put in the giving.”

– Mother Teresa

This week, the United Nations is celebrating International Day of Charity, which commemorates the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 “for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress.”

Mother Teresa was born in 1910 in Macedonia and at a young age felt called to be a nun and serve by helping the poor. On her first trip to India she began by working as a teacher; however, the widespread poverty of Calcutta made a deep impression on her, and this inspired her to start a new order called “The Missionaries of Charity.” The primary objective of this mission was to look after people, who nobody else was prepared to look after.

In many ways Mother Teresa’s journey is similar to that of Kupenda’s founder, Cynthia Bauer, who first traveled to Kenya in 1998 and was deeply moved by the plight of the children with disabilities she met there. As with Mother Teresa, Cynthia was inspired to organize a group of people to address the problems she saw. Today, that group is us: the staff, Board members, donors, and supporters of Kupenda.

In honor of International Day of Charity and the lifesaving work of both Mother Theresa and Cynthia Bauer, please consider one of these ways to continue supporting our children with disabilities:

  1. Join our fun run at Gordon College next Saturday, September 16 to raise more support for children with disabilities in Kenya
  2. Donate to Kupenda so we can help more children with disabilities access medical care and education
  3. Sponsor a child with disabilities for less than $1 per day to help them access schooling and health care
  4. Join our upcoming volunteer trip to visit Kupenda’s staff and children in Kenya from January 12-24, 2017
  5. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and share our posts with your friends and family
  6. Check out our website and blog and share Kupenda kids’ success stories with your network
  7. Refer us to professionals or organizations that can join us as guest bloggers, speakers, and/or advisors
  8. Invite us to speak at your school, home, church or office so more people can learn about Kupenda’s work
  9. Co-host a dinner, holiday party or performance event with us to raise money for Kupenda kids
  10. Pray for wisdom and guidance as we work to grow this organization and reach more children in need
