DFA & Kupenda Listen to Community Members to Improve Accessibility and Inclusion in Duxbury

by Jessica Charles Abrams

Yesterday, Duxbury for All (DFA) and Kupenda for the Children hosted a community listening session to better understand the needs of people with disabilities in Duxbury, focusing on both inclusion and accessibility. These sessions are part of an ongoing effort to ensure that everyone in the community can fully participate in town life.

Among the participants was Eric Nightingale (26), pictured here with his friend Alexandra Hegg (25). They have been friends for 25 years. Recently, they spent the afternoon “shipbuilding” at Shipyard Beach, which was recently improved by the Senior Center’s Livable Duxbury initiative to be wheelchair accessible. Thanks to these leaders’ efforts—installing accessible paths, mobility mats, and designated spaces—Shipyard Beach now offers a welcoming place for people with disabilities to enjoy the sand and harbor views.

Eric attended the session with his mother and certified personal assistant, alongside 15 other teachers, parents, leaders, and advocates. Their stories, recommendations, and insights will guide DFA and Kupenda as they plan a training for all Duxbury stakeholders, aimed at expanding accessibility and inclusion across town facilities, events, and programs, while also addressing stigma and fostering positive attitudes toward people with disabilities.

This session demonstrates what’s possible when community members, advocates, and organizations collaborate: accessible spaces become more than infrastructure—they become spaces of connection, friendship, and joy. Through this partnership, DFA and Kupenda are committed to continuing and expanding this work, making Duxbury a truly inclusive, welcoming community for all.
