How Inclusive Education Gives Children Like Martin Independence and Inspires Schools to Change

by Veronicah Kuria

Kupenda’s inclusive education initiatives are helping children with disabilities like Martin gain independence and dignity while inspiring schools to become more accessible and inclusive.

Martin is a bright boy with muscular dystrophy enrolled in a mainstream primary school in Jilore, Kilifi County. Although determined to learn, his physical challenges made each school day painful and exhausting. Without a wheelchair, he relied on classmates to carry him to class and to the toilet—something that left him feeling like a burden. To avoid inconveniencing others, he sometimes ate or drank less, and the strain of being carried caused severe pain in his ribs and back.

Everything changed when Kuhenza for the Children provided Martin with a wheelchair. He describes it as ā€œgaining the ability to walk again.ā€ With his new mobility, he can now move freely around the school with little assistance—restoring his confidence and independence. Inspired by Martin’s progress, the school renovated its ramps and improved accessibility across the campus, ensuring that all students can learn in a more inclusive environment.

Martin’s teacher, Miss Nipher Achola, shared that he is an average learner but one who shows remarkable determination. Though he struggles with handwriting due to muscle weakness, he is making steady progress. His classmates, once unsure how to relate to him, have become more understanding through Kuhenza’s inclusive education sessions, learning to treat him with friendship and respect rather than pity.

Martin’s story shows how one wheelchair—and the inclusive advocacy behind it—can transform an entire school. Because of Kuhenza’s support, the school is becoming more accessible in its buildings and more accepting in its culture. A single act of empowerment restored Martin’s dignity, eased his pain, and helped his community see that inclusion benefits everyone.

Kuhenza for the Children is deeply grateful to its partners and friends whose support makes these transformations possible. Together, we are proving that with the right tools and mindset, every child can learn, belong, and succeed.
