This year’s foreign aid freeze has left more than 23,000 people in Kilifi, Kenya without access to essential care. But the greatest threat many children face isn’t just the loss of services — it is the deepening stigma that follows.

When families can’t access medical care, harmful beliefs often resurface. Children with disabilities are once again being hidden at home, blamed for their disabilities, or denied schooling because their communities believe their conditions are caused by curses, witchcraft or sin.

This painful reality is why Kupenda’s stigma-reduction work has become more critical than ever.

Through trained pastors, community health promoters, parent support groups, and disability advocates, Kupenda is working daily to correct misinformation, replace superstition with medical knowledge, and connect children to life-saving care.

One urgent example is the recent shortage of epilepsy medications for children like Claris.

In communities where epilepsy is still widely misunderstood, seizures are often believed to be caused by demon possession — leaving children isolated, feared, or even unsafe. Without medication, stigma grows and the seizures become life-threatening.

A monthly gift of $25 helps children like Claris access life-saving anti-seizure medication and the community support needed to keep them safe, included, and understood.
