A New Dormitory at Timboni Special School: A Win for Inclusion

by Veronicah Kuria

Through Kupenda for the Children’s advocacy programs, staff and trained disability advocates have inspired community action that led to the establishment of Timboni Special School in 2020. Located in a remote area, the school has since become a beacon of hope for children with disabilities and their families.

When the school first opened, the total enrollment was 27 children. However, there were many more families impacted by disability in need of the vital support this special school provides.

Recognizing this need, Kupenda supported the school administration in drafting a proposal for an additional dormitory, which would allow more children to board at the school and attend classes. Kupenda also provided professional architectural design input and offered ongoing guidance throughout the process. Nearly five years later, through joint efforts with the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya, Kupenda helped unveil the new dormitory.

This facility will create space for 20 more children with disabilities to access care, education, and good nutrition. Its presence emphasizes the power of collaboration and national partnership between public benefit organizations and the government in advancing the disability movement.

The dormitory’s construction marks a significant step towards creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for children with disabilities. Yet many children with disabilities remain at home, awaiting their opportunity to attend. We appeal to champions, partners, and supporters to join hands in supporting these children, ensuring they can access the education, care, and inclusion they deserve.
