Colin Sarff, a long-time donor and Child Sponsor of Kupenda, was honored in his hometown of Newburyport, Massachusetts on August 10th, 2020, through the observance of their very own Disorders of the Corpus Callosum (DCC) Awareness Day

According to the National Organization of Disorders of the Corpus Callosum, “The corpus callosum is a band of nerve fibers that connect the two halves of the brain. Children and adults that are born without this connection (or without a fully formed structure) must find other ways to communicate and get information from one side of the brain to the other. One in 2,053 individuals live with a disorder of the corpus callosum (DCC) and face communication, social, developmental, and behavioral challenges”.

In Kenya, over 200,000 people are living with different cognitive disabilities that present similar challenges in education and day-to-day life (Kenya National Bureau of Statistics).

Since Colin’s diagnosis at the age of 16, he has been able to overcome many challenges through a gained understanding of body language, his own perseverance, and the support of his communities.

At Kupenda, we are grateful for Colin’s resilience and advocacy, and for the town of Newburyport and Mayor Donna D. Holaday’s tribute to the children and adults living with DCC.
