Many supporters experience a connection to Kupenda for the Children’s work, whether or not they are directly impacted by a disability. Kupenda’s mission to serve children with disabilities in low-income countries who are exponentially disadvantaged based on their age, economic status, and social perceptions of their disability may, for some, seem far removed. Yet the heart of Kupenda’s work is fostering love, connection, and acceptance–universal human longings. This makes Kupenda’s mission one that everyone can connect with, including individuals like Michael Thompson.

Michael is a professional accountant with over 25 years of experience in the finance industry. He has supported Kupenda’s work for years and has served on our Advisory Committee for the last year and a half.

I was able to sit down with Michael and ask him about his role in and perspective on Kupenda’s work. Here is what he had to say:

Rebecca: What drives you to be involved with Kupenda for the Children?

Michael: I think it’s just helping people who need help. Some people don’t want to ask for help, but everybody needs support in their lives … and I think to be able to do what you do to help these children and help their communities is incredible.

Rebecca: What is the most important component of what Kupenda does?

Michael: I think the education seems like one of the biggest things that they do because education is the thing that is the longest lasting. … If Kupenda is not there every day, they will still have those tools to help them through their day-to-day and change the mindset of people. If you get to the younger people there, they are the future of those communities, and they’re the ones, if they get that mindset themselves by learning through Kupenda, I think they can carry that forward, with or without Kupenda at their side.

Rebecca: What has stood out to you about Kupenda’s work?

Michael: I mean, to me it’s just the passion … [Cindy’s] passion for everything that is going on in Kupenda and how she is just working constantly, traveling, meeting with people. So, the passion that she has for this really makes you want to be more involved and help as much as you can.
