From Grief to Hope: Florence’s Story

by Lauren Blair

Many of the children with disabilities Kupenda supports have stories shaped by hardship. In their communities, disabilities are often seen as a curse, and children are undervalued and denied access to basic opportunities—barriers that can become even more significant during seasons of instability or loss. This Easter, we are reminded that even after the darkest moments, new life can emerge. One such child is Florence, whose story reflects both profound loss and renewed hope.

In many low-income countries, access to education remains out of reach for many children with disabilities: only about 2% are enrolled in school. While school in Kenya is free, families impacted by disability often face additional costs, as specialized schools are few and can be far from home, requiring children to board. Yet, through the perseverance of those who recognize their worth, their lives are beginning to reflect the healing power of faith, compassion, and community

A Season of Loss

Over the past year, Florence, a talented young girl who is deaf, walked through a heartbreaking season of loss. Within just three months, she lost three of the people who had been her pillars of care and support

First, she lost her grandmother, a gentle presence who made school holidays something to look forward to. After a prolonged illness, her passing left a deep loneliness in Florence’s life.

Soon after, tragedy struck again. Her uncle, who helped provide for her school needs, drowned. His sudden death brought both grief and the loss of vital support for her education.

Then came the most devastating loss of all: her mother. As a single parent and Florence’s primary caregiver, her mother’s absence changed everything. In her final days, Florence stayed home to care for her, missing two months of school out of love and devotion.

Afterward, Florence moved in with her sister. While she was welcomed, the added responsibilities created strain, and meeting her basic needs, like transportation and school supplies, became difficult.

Support and Healing

Concerned for her well-being, her sister sought support through Kupenda’s team in Kenya, who provided counseling so that Florence could begin to heal.

Kupenda also stepped in to provide school fees required for boarding at her specialized school for the deaf, supplies and toiletries, and transportation so Florence could continue her education.

Today, Florence is doing well academically, participates in class, and supports her classmates. She also plays volleyball, participates in school clubs, and enjoys dancing to gospel music at church, where she also sings in the choir.

Her sister shared:

“We are truly grateful. Your support has lifted a heavy burden from us. May God bless you abundantly.”

A Message of Hope

Florence’s life is a powerful testimony to the truth we celebrate at Easter. Through Christ, we are reminded that sorrow is not the end of the story. Though she has faced deep grief, her story is not defined by loss, but by hope, healing, and the promise of new life.
