Seeds of Change: Empowering Families Through Livelihoods

by Rebecca Heidorn

Kupenda’s ongoing efforts to empower caregivers and youth with disabilities through inclusive, sustainable livelihoods recently reached a significant milestone. On April 14, 2025, Kupenda hosted a transformative ceremony at its Advocacy Center in Kilifi County, Kenya, to offer small business loan disbursements for 50 recipients—including 29 members of local self-help groups, 7 independent caregivers, and 15 youth who had completed vocational training.

To qualify for this opportunity, these individuals completed comprehensive training in climate-resilient agriculture, chicken rearing, nutrition, and entrepreneurship. Each participant also developed a business plan with the support of a mentor, laying a strong foundation for success.

The event brought together leaders from local and national government, including the Senior Principal Chief of Gede, the County Director for the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), and Kupenda’s Kenyan Board Chair. Each speaker highlighted the importance of financial discipline, community collaboration, and continued advocacy for the rights of children with disabilities.

Leonard Mbonani, Kupenda’s Kenya Director, emphasized that while the organization continues to support children’s needs, caregivers also play a vital role in ensuring their children’s well-being.

One of the most moving moments came from Rachel, chairlady of a local group, whose words reflected the passion and commitment of all the recipients:

“It feels like we’ve been born afresh … energized to continue our advocacy work to ensure no child with disabilities is hidden at home.”

This program represents not just economic opportunity but also hope, dignity, and inclusion for families of children with disabilities.

Kupenda remains committed to building inclusive communities by transforming harmful beliefs about disability and equipping families with the tools they need to thrive economically, socially, and emotionally. We look forward to seeing these businesses grow and are confident in the ripple effects they will create in their communities!
